California or Bust! Written by Judith Stamper and Illustrated by Craig Spearing

This collection of letters home tells the story of Luke's trip across the USA to California. Why are Luke and his dad traveling to California? For GOLD!

Why do you think Luke and his dad left their home and family to go on such a long journey?

First: Pick a day before Luke and Dad left their home and write a letter to explain to Ma, Sarah, Jeb, and Smiley why they must go away.

Second: At the end of the story Luke writes home to say he and Pa struck it rich! To strike it rich means they earned lots of money. If you were Luke and struck it rich, what would you do with all of that money?
